Govt to consider hero`s titles for Gus Dur, Soeharto

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono will put proposals to name the late former presidents KH Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur) and Soeharto through the mechanism required by the law, a presidential spokesman said.
"The President acknowledges the inputs received from various groups, community leaders, and political parties to name Gus Dur a national hero," presidential spokesman Julian Aldrin Pasha said here Monday.<>
The President had received the proposals and decided to consider them through the procedures required by a relevant law. "In this case, the proposals will be considered in accordance with provisions in Law No.20/2009 on the conferment of titles and decorations. Let us just see what the end result of the procedures will be," Julian said.
Under the law, the proposals would be taken up and discussed by a state honors council which had yet to be formed.
The council would be made up of representatives of three main elements of society, namely the academic world, the military and the public at large, Julian said the president had also received proposals to give the same national hero status to Indonesia's second president, the late Soeharto. These proposals would also be made to undergo the law-sanctioned procedures.
Asked whether Gus Dur's national hero status could be announced on the occasion of National Heroes' Day on November 10, 2010, Julian said it was possible.
The government would certainly choose a special day, not any ordinary day, to make the announcement, he added.
Gus Dur died on Wednesday (Dec 30) at 18:45 PM at Jakarta's Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital at the age of 68 years. He was buried on the next day near the grave of his grandfather, KH Hasyim Ashari at Tebuireng Islamic boarding school in Jombang, East Java.
Earlier, the Nation's Awakening Party (PKB) which Gus Dur founded, urged the government to give the national hero's title to KH Abdurrahman Wahid.
The general secretary of the PKB's West Sulawesi chapter, Muh. Yahya Hanafi, urged the government to name KH Abdurrahman Wahid a national hero within the first 40 days after his demise. (ant/dar)
