The Indonesia's largest Muslim organization Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) called on people to remain maintaining religious harmony among religious adherents especially ahead of the Christmas celebrations tomorrow.
General chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Hasyim Muzadi expected the Christmas celebrated by Christians to be a means of maintaining religious co-existence among religious adherents.<>
"So, good Muslims should not reduce their own religious values to make others satisfied. But we must respect the religious beliefs of others. At this point, we agree on a disagreement. Here is the moderation of NU," Hasyim told NU Online on Thursday.
He said, the Christmas had two aspects, namely ritual and the celebratedness, adding that Muslims could not follow any ritual aspect for it is engaged in divine worship.
In addition, the President of the World Conference of Religions for Peace said, all religions had the same purpose in creating justice and prosperity. At this point, he said, all religions could deepen their collaborations.
"We all need to keep and secure everything. Whoever they may be regardless of their belief should do positive things," Hasyim said.
The leader of Al Hikam Islamic boarding school (pesantren) expressed his appreciation to all Indonesians having shown harmonious relations among religious adherents.
"Cross-religious relations in Indonesia have lately been the model for the world in which plurality has been on the right track," Hasyim added. (mkf)
