Perennially plagued by internal rifts, the National Awakening Party may also face the risk of failing to pass the requirements for eligibility to take part in the 2014 elections, a politician said on Wednesday.
Ganjar Pranowo, deputy chairman of the House of Representatives Commission II, overseeing home and political party affairs, said that if its internal conflicts were not quickly settled, the National Awakening Party (PKB) would have difficulties in passing the requirements during the verification phase.

Besides having to face a splinter faction supportive of the late party founder KH Abdurrahman “Gus Dur” Wahid, the PKB is now also facing a lawsuit filed by two lawmakers it had recalled from the House, Lily Wahid and Effendy Choirie.
Gus Dur’s faction, led by his daughter Yenny Wahid, is also suing the PKB under Muhaimin Iskandar’s leadership at the State Administrative Court.
Ganjar, of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), said the Justice and Human Rights Ministry, responsible for verifying participants in the next election, would not verify the PKB as a political party if the disputes were not settled.
The deadline for the verification phase is in August, he said.
PKB secretary general Imam Nahrawi said his party believed the problems could be settled soon. Imam said the fact remained that the government had and would continue to recognize Muhaimin as the PKB chairman.
“So we are confident that none of those [suits] will trouble us,” he was quoted by the Jakarta Globe as saying
On Tuesday, the Central Jakarta District Court ordered the PKB to attempt to settle the dispute with Lily and Effendy through mediation.
The party had requested the House leadership withdraw the two lawmakers from the legislature. The pair had been repeatedly reprimanded by their colleagues for alleged lack of discipline and defying party lines.
Marwan Ja’far, PKB House faction chairman, said the party was ready to meet with the two rogue lawmakers in line with the court’s order.
The party has been greatly weakened following the split caused by the bitter dispute between Gus Dur and Muhaimin for control of the party that ended with the former’s faction separating itself.
In the latest blow to the party, Ikhwanul Muballighin, a PKB wing organization, announced on Tuesday its separation from the party and its move to join the ruling Democratic Party. (dar)
