NU high education institutions should have global insights

High education institutions managed by NU should immediately embrace global insights to produce students capable keeping up with any global constellation. But all this seems difficult to address for at the same time they should also preserve NU's long-standing traditions.
Official of the Ministry of Religious Affairs Dr H Mundzier Suparta MA made the remarks as delivering a scholarly oration dealing with the challenges and opportunities of Islamic education in the global era at the first graduation ceremony of the Jakarta's NU High Institute of Islamic Studies (STAINU) on Wednesday.<>
"Our education has a duty to instill religious values which have most of the time been opposed to other religious ones. While at the same time, we should also instill the character of either national or global cultures," he said.
The ex-chairman of the STAINU management said that efforts to build the ideal global education can be done by following through with strategic and planned steps.
As for him, such global challenges should, again and again, be responded by NU education institutions. All this, he added, was such a must for NU circles to be able to take part in the arena of global competition.
To meet all the ideals, NU education institutions should play its important roles and be active by reviewing its orientations in regard with Islamic education. At this point, he said, "the reconstruction of system and management is a must in nature."
He said that in addition to marking the high achievements of mankind in such fields of technology and information, the globalization have also given an easiness in the process of communication among nations and triggered the emergence of asymmetric acculturation, namely the unequal relations between developed and developing countries.
He added that education was the most important thing as a means of facing any global challenge, saying that it became a strategic instrument to build the nation's civilization.
"There is a very beautiful expression when the Germans wanted to build a modern civilization, 'If you want to build your nation, build your education first," he said. (nam)
