NU chairman meets with grand sheikh of Al Azhar, invites him to NU's ICIS

General Chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Hasyim Muzadi met Sunday (13/4) with the Grand Sheikh of Al Azhar Sayyid Tantawi and invited him to come to NU's 3rd International Conference of Islamic Scholars (ICIS) that would reportedly be held in Jakarta in July 2008 ahead.
Hasyim who is also the Secretary General of the ICIS was welcome by Sheikh Tantawi, expressing his willingness to the purposeful international event.<>
"Insya Allah (God willing), if there is no such obstacle, I will fulfill the invitation," Sheikh Tantawi said, adding that he was really proud of the PBNU-initiated program.
On the sidelines of his meeting with the top figure of the Cairo's Al Azhar, Hasyim was accompanied by Fadlolan Musyaffa' who is also Rais Syuriah of the Nahdlatul Ulama Special Branch Board of Egypt and Aan Zainul Anwar, Vice Secretary of the PCINU's Executive Council (Tanfidziyah).
Hasyim told Sheikh Tantawi that the PBNU had successfully held its two similar events that involved ulema and scholars throughout the world in taking up especially important issues faced by Muslim communities as a whole.
"The previous conferences were also attended by prominent ulema from Malaysia, Iran, Syria, Lebanon, Morocco and many other Muslim countries," Hasyim told Sheikh Tantawi and added the conferences were also attended by ulema and Muslim scholars from both European countries and the United States.
While Sheikh Tantawi said that he would soon visit Southeast Asian countries especially Indonesia to hold meetings with Islamic organization leaders.
Hasyim's visit to Cairo was also to attend a meeting taking up issues on increasing achievement of Indonesian students in Egypt. The meeting was co-hosted by the Indonesian Embassy in Cairo.
The meeting also involved figures and stakeholders related to the education of Indonesian students in Egypt such as Indonesian Minister of Religious Affairs Maftuh Basyuni, state officials and Islamic organization leaders. (nam)
