NU activists establish "Abdurrahman Wahid Islamic Senior High School"

The death of the fourth Indonesian president, KH Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur), has always given inspiration. A score of NU young activists in Bogor agreed to establish an educational institution called as Abdurrahman Wahid Islamic Senior High School.

The activists said that the plan to soon establish the school was part of respecting Gus Dur for his significant roles and contribution to NU in particular and the nation in general.<>

At a meeting facilitated by the Elsas Foundation Jakarta at the Villa Kampoeng, Bogor, West Java, over the weekend, Hilmy Muhammadiyah, willing earning his doctor's degree from the Indonesian University, said that the school was part of efforts to pay tribute to Gus Dur as the most outstanding inspirational figure.

"The Abdurrahman Wahid Islamic Senior High School is the realization of the 'continuation' of Gus Dur as the man of inspiration. I do believe, he will also inspire academic circles in madrassa (Islamic schools), especially students," Hilmy said.

In the meantime, lecturer at the National University Jakarta, HM. Sulthan Fatoni, M.Si, said that this year was the phase marking the revival of NU generation after the death of Gus Dur.

All this, he said, wat part of "efforts to maintain the continuation", adding that "junior and senior high school students should be introduced the man of Gus Dur, the prominent figure of the 21th century, born from the womb of NU and the instrument is through madrassa and pesantren (Islamic boarding schools)."

At the same time, Asrorun Niam Sholeh, lecturer at the State Islamic university Jakarta, said that the infrastructure of the school's establishment had been ready.

The meeting was also attended by such NU young activists as Abdullah Masud, Ridlwan Taiyeb, Miftahul Huda, Dewi Ma'rifat and so on. (nam)
