A Muslim woman won a case against the Swedish public transportation company Arriva after being directed to get off a bus for refusing to take off her niqab scarf.<>

The 20-year-old Muslim woman wears the niqab, which covers the whole face except the eyes. AJP reported.

She won an amount of 25,000 kronor equivalent to USD 4,203 from Arriva after reaching an anti-discrimination agreement.

According to UPI, the bus driver asked the woman to leave a bus in Malmo after she refused to take off her niqab.

He claimed that he wanted to see her face even though the transit pass she was holding required no such thing.

"The bus driver has not acted according to Arriva's values. There is no doubt where the fault lies and this is most regrettable. We are happy to pay out the money to make up for it," said Jan Wildau of Arriva, according to the Swedish News Agency TT.

Arriva also sacked the driver to ensure that such incident is not going to happen again.

Although there are no official statistics of Muslims in Sweden, estimates count 300,000 to 350,000 Muslims in the year 2000 and a roughly estimate of 100,000, who are second generation Muslims.

Malmo is said to be hosting the highest number of Muslims in Sweden. (dar)
