Indonesian navy chief Admiral Slamet Soebijanto on Wednesday replaced the head of the marine corps whose men were involved in a bloody shooting which left four civilians dead.
"Major General Safzen Noerdin was replaced by Major General Nono Sampono in the ceremony this morning," a staffer at the navy's spokesman office, who only identified himself as Heri told AFP.<>
Noerdin traded positions with Sampono, taking the latter's previous post as navy inspector general at the headquarters, Heri said.
In the last days of his command, marines shot into a crowd of villagers during a protest linked to a land dispute in Pasuruan, East Java, last week, leaving four civilians dead, including two women.
Antara reported, an investigation is underway and the 13 marines involved in the incident are under detention for questioning.
Heri said the replacement had been planned "long before the incident" and was not related to the shooting. He declined to elaborate further.
The villagers were protesting at the development of land recently reclaimed by the navy. The firing started after the crowd became angry and started throwing stones at the marines who were trying to disperse them, some witnesses have said. (dar)
