The Nahdlatul Ulama Regional Board (PWNU) of East Java has prepared some 11 locations for so-called as rukyatul hilal (crescent observation--with the naked eye) in determining the first day of Ramadhan 1432 H.
"We have issued a letter of instruction on rukyatul hilal no. 1321 to branch boards of NU throughout East Java on 19 July (2011), especially for 11 locations potential for doing a rukyat," deputy chairman of the PWNU HM Sholeh Hayatdi here on Sunday (31/7).
Accompanied by chairman of the NU Moonsighting Committee (LFNU) of the E. Java PWNU Abd Salam Nawawi, Sholeh said that the 11 locations were Tanjung Kodok (Lamongan), Bukit Condro (Gresik), Serang (Blitar), Ambet and Pasean (Pamekasan), Gebeng (Bangkalan), Nambangan (Kenjeran, Surabaya). South Beach (Malang), Giliketapang (Probolinggo), Plengkung (Banyuwangi), and Pasir Putih (Situbondo).
The crescent sighting for Ramadhan and Idul Fitri holiday has been a point of dispute among Muslims for a long time. As the Muslims have spread in all parts of the globe including non-Muslim countries this problem has grown many folds.
Every time when Idul Fitri and Ramadhan come, instead of good wishes and warm feelings among Muslims, a bitter and heated discussions take away the joy of celebration. In one city various Muslim groups start and end Ramadhan on different days. Some times Eid is celebrated in one city on three different days. (dar)
