House Speaker Marzuki Alie said the State Title Council’s decision to omit Indonesia's second and fourth presidents, Soeharto and KH Abdurrahman Wahid from its heroes’ list this year was fair.
“I have noticed that news on them is still creating huge controversy among the people. Thus to avoid unnecessary conflict between fellow citizens, I think the best way to deal with it is to give it more time,” Marzuki told journalists Thursday.r />
He added that, “I believe that given the fact both of them did huge favors for this country, the hero titles will come in just a matter of time.”
He said that both Soeharto and KH Abdurrahman “Gus Dur” Wahid made huge contributions to the country despite weaknesses during their tenures as presidents.
“Thus it is unfair if the people only look to their strong points without the will to comprehend their weaknesses,” he said.
The State Title Council has decided to award former minister Johannes Leimena and Johannes Abraham Dimara with the national hero statuses this year, beating several other candidates such as former Jakarta governor Ali Sadikin, former presidents Soeharto and KH Abdurrahman Wahid. (jp/dar)
