General Chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Hasyim Muzadi said that conflicts and many other sectarian issues were most of the time caused by the intervention of foreign countries willing to make use of the conflicts.
"Any conflicts happening in countries such as Indonesia, Thailand, Afghanistan, Iraq, and any other Middle East countries were caused by foreign intervention," Hasyim said on the sidelines of the meeting with ulema from Thailand at the PBNU headquarters, Jalan Kramat Raya, Jakarta on Wednesday (23/1).<>
Hasyim then took such an example that the conflicts happening in Maluku and Aceh were not really religious-nuance conflicts. "Rather, the conflicts were created as if the religion becomes such the source or cause of the ones."
"This (scene) has also happened in southern Thailand. That is why do not let religion be a means of conflict being solely created by foreign countries."
In dealing with the southern Thailand's conflict, Hasyim added, there were considerations that should importantly be taken into account not only both security and military, but also justice, social and economic welfare, and so forth.
At the meantime the Thailand delegates led by Tuan Aziz Benhawan did expect fedbacks and suggestions form the Nahdliyin-based organization to overcome the conflicts in southern Thailand.
The Chairman of the Advisory council for peace building in the south border provinces said he would like to share experiences with NU dealt with it activities such as religion, education, health, and economy.
