Islam should not be placed as opposed to modernity because both can go hand in hand, a noted Muslim cleric of Wollonggong University said.

Dr Nadirsyah Hosen, LLM, MA (Hons), PhD, executive board chairman of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) Australia and New Zealand chapter, and Islamic law lecturer at Wollonggong University made the remarks in Brisbane on Friday (28/3) evening.<>

The teachings of Islam taught its followers to develop sciences and use their logic, and the golden days of Islamic civilization in Cordova, Spain, was concrete proof, he said.

"A moderate stance has become the best choice. Islam is very flexible and adaptable to natural development," Nadirsyah told dozens of members of a Muslim study group here.

Nadirsyah said further that facing modernity in a moderate way, was the best choice for Muslims, as while maintaining their Islamic identity, they are also able to accept positive impact of the modernity. (ant/dar)
