Egypt expresses condolences on Indonesia's natural disasters

Egyptian Foreign Affairs Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit in a letter to his Indonesian counterpart Marty Natalegawa has expressed condolences on the natural disasters that hit Indonesia recently.
"I received with deep sorrow the devastating news of the tsunami disaster which happened in the Mentawai islands. On behalf of the Egyptian government and people, I would like to express my sincerest condolences to the government of Indonesia as well as my heartfelt sympathy to the Indonesian people," the Egyptian foreign minister said in his letter, according to a press release received in Jakarta on Thursday.

The Mentawai Islands on Monday, October 25 were hit by a tsunami following an earthquake measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale at 21.42 hours.
According to data from the local Disaster Mitigation Unit, until Friday (Oct 29) at 15.00 hours local time, the death toll from the disaster was recorded at 428 and the number of missing persons at 50. Some 172 people had been seriously injured and 325 others lightly wounded. The number of displaced people and now living at evacuation centers was 15,097.
At least 517 houses were destroyed or badly damaged, and 204 others suffered minor damage.
Also damaged were five elementary schools, one junior high school, six offices, eight houses of worship, seven bridges, two resorts and a boat.
Earlier, the government had announced a plan to build temporary houses for tsunami victims in Mentawai saying the project was expected to be completed before Christmas.
West Sumatra Vice Governor Muslim Kasim said on Wednesday "we hope the tsunami and earthquake victims will be able to move to the temporary houses before Christmas." He said building materials such as wood, roofs and nails had already been sent to Sikakap by boat.
"We will build the houses with funds donated by various parties," he said.
Meanwhile, the National Defense Forces (TNI) had sent another ship laden with various supplies such as food, medicines, tents and blankets to Mentawai for distribtion among the tsunami survivors. (ant/dar)
