Religious Affairs Minister, Suryadharma Ali, says the Umar bin Khattab Islamic boarding school in Bima, West Nusa Tenggara, only teaches radicalism and not Islam.

“It’s not even a school. It is more of a radicalism coaching center,” Suryadharma said on Friday, during his trip to attend the 16th Nahdlatul Ulama Muslim Congress in Lampung, Antara.com reported.

He added the boarding school did not qualify as an Islamic boarding school since an Islamic boarding school is supposed to have ulema who have a deep understanding and knowledge about Islam. It must also be inclusive and deliver economic advantages to local people.

He said one of the supporting features disqualifying it as an Islamic boarding school is the fact that, despite being operational for 10 years, the school had only 35 child and 14 adult students, which proves the school did not interact with the local community. (jp/dar)
