Two people were punished with eight whip lashes in the yard of the Al Munawarah Mosque in Jantho, Aceh Besar, on Friday after being convicted of violating Islamic law.

Anis Saputra (24) and Kiki Hanafilia (17) were lashed before hundreds of villagers, after the Jantho Islamic court on Thursday ruled that the two had violated Article 22 of the region's by-law Number 14 of 2003 on indecent acts.r />
Prosecutor Deby Rinaldi said the two were sentenced to eight lashes each and what had aggravated their guilt was the fact they were each no longer single persons.

"Anis has a wife who is now seven months pregnant and living in East Aceh while Kiki also has a husband but she is having a problem with her marriage," he said.

The two were taken to the place by car belonging to the prosecutor's office and later taken up onto a platform to receive lashes guarded by Islamic Law police.

After being whipped the two were taken to the prosecutor's office in Jantho along with a medical team to have their health checked.

Although they showed they suffered from the pain of lashes the two looked tough after the punishment was carried out.

The chief of the district order and Shariah Law police, Rusli, said that this was the fourth punishment by lashes carried out in Aceh Besar this year to give a lesson to others not to violate the Islamic law.

"This is not intended to hurt people but to give them a lesson. It is hoped with the kind of punishment more people would stay away from committing acts that violate the Islamic law," he said.

Anis from Aceh Jaya and Kiki from Aceh Besar were caught red-handed kissing each other in a forest in Tanoh Anoe, Lhoong subdistrict, Friday night on October 22, 2010 while Kiki was almost nude. The two had not as yet had an intercourse, according to the prosecutor's document. (dar)
