TNI not worried about possible limitation of US military assistance

The National Defense Forces (TNI) is not worried about the possibility of the United States limiting its military assistance to Indonesia following the recent clash between TNI personnel and civilians at Alastlogo village in Pasuran, East Java, a military spokesman said.
"We are not worried about it as the government will certainly find a way to meet the TNI`s military equipment needs without depending on the US," Air Commodore Sagom Tamboen, chief of the TNI`s Information Center, told ANTARA News here Tuesday.<>
He admitted most of the TNI`s military equipment and spare parts were made in the US and the military embargo imposed by the superpower a decade ago had affected operational systems in every unit of the TNI.
But having learned a lesson from the experience, the government was continuously trying to find ways out from the TNI`s problems in procurement of military equipment, Sagom said.
He also said he disagreed with the opinion that the reform process in the TNI had yet to run optimally, leading the US to consider imposing a military sanction on Indonesia again.
Sagom said the process of TNI`s reform had now run for about 10 ten years and it had done so without pressures from any other countries, including the US, so the superpower had no right to judge the TNI in relation with its reform.
Earlier, US Democratic Party member Nita Lowey had proposed that the US Congress limit US military assistance to Indonesia following the clash between marines and residents of Alastlogo village that left four people dead.
Lowey also made the proposal because, she said, the TNI`s reform process had yet to run maximally and the TNI`s accountability on the September 1999 riots in Timor Leste had not been completely settled.
In reaction to Lowey`s proposal, Defense Minister Juwono Sudarsono said Indonesia through its embassy in the US was negotiating with the US government to prevent the US lawmaker's idea from becoming US policy.
An official letter issued by the TNI commander on Dec 2, 2005 .2 2005, mentions the various US-made weapon systems and pieces of equipment possessed by the Indonesian military for which the TNI needs a regular supply of spare parts.
Acccrding to the list, the Indonesian Army among other things might need spare parts for its V-58 , Commando Rangers, Commando Scouts armored vehicles, Bell-205 and N-Bell 412 helicopters.
The Indonesia Navy might need spare parts for its MK-46 TPO and Harpoon missile systems, Cassa 212 , Nomad Bell-412 and Nomad N22/24 planes.
The Indonesian Air Force would have a need for spare parts for its F-5 Tiger, F-16 Fighting Falcon and OV-10 fighter aircraft. (dar)
