Thousands of teachers in Karanganyar district, Central Java, staged a rally outside the local legislative body (DPRD) building Tuesday rejecting its decision to slash educational budget for 2008.

Deputy Chief of the Karanganyar chapter of the Indonesian Teachers Association (PGRI) Aris Munandar said the teachers wanted local legislators to pay more attention to budget allocations for the educational sector.<>

They wondered why the regional budget for the educational sector was slashed at a time when the central government raised the educational budget.

Earlier in the day, some of the demonstrators met with District Head Rina Iriani Sri Ratnaningsih. At the meeting, they asked her to struggle for an increase in the district’s educational budget. (ant)
