Religious leaders OK resolution on govt over Lapindo case

Religious leaders have agreed to prepare a resolution on the government over the Lapindo mudflow case in Sidoarjo, East Java. they have urged the government to immediately pay more attention to Lapindo victims' fate.

The expected resolution was approved by the religious leaders at a meeting held at the office of the country's largest Muslim organization, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), Jalan Kramat Raya 164 Jakarta on Wednesday (9/5).<>

Present at the occasion, General Chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU), KH Hasyim Muzadi, the head of the Bishop's Conference of Indonesia, Cardinal Julius Rijadi Darmaatmaja, Chairman of Indonesian Communion of Churches, Dr Andreas Anangguru Yewangoe.

Hasyim told reporters that the religious leaders were deeply concerned over the fate of the victims. For the leader of Al Hikam Islamic boarding "Pesantren" school "the government has been now focusing on the overcoming of the mudflow rather thanthe fate of the victims."

As reported by NU Online, around 300 victims of the Lapindo Brantas hot mudflow disaster rallied outside the State Palace here several weeks ago to demand adequate compensation for property they had lost because of the calamity.

The protesters hailing from Tanggulangin, Sidoarjo, East Java, demanded that the government give them adequate compensation for the homes and lands that had been flooded by incessant mud coming out from a Lapindo Brantas gas well in Sidoarjo. (rif)
