President urged to end religiously-motivated violence

The National Commission on Women (Komnas Perempuan) has urged President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to take appropriate measures to put an end to violence committed in the name of religion,
Komnas Perempuan chairwoman Yuniyanti Chuzaifah said at a press conference after meeting President Yudhoyono at his office on Thursday, acts of violence in the name of religion should never happen again, and thus the government was expected to give the strongest possible sanction to the perpetrators of such acts.

She said the frequent religiously-motivated acts of violence so far had had a direct impact on the lives of women, and therefore President Yudhoyono was urged to bring them to an end.
As reported by Antara news agency, Yuniyanti and seven commissioners from Komnas Perempuan met with the president at his office to discuss the matter.
The Komnas Perempuan chairperson said that at the meeting, President Yudhoyono conveyed a resolute stance of the government to bring to an end violent acts in Indonesia.
She said the president wanted to invite all stakeholders to seek out the best possible solution to frequent violent acts in the name of religion.
Komnas Perempuan at present is cooperating with various related institutions to formulate the protection and fulfillment of the rights of women and children who often become the victims of violence. (dar)
