President calls on NU to strengthen Indonesia hand in hand with govt

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono called on all members of Nahdlatul Ulama (the biggest Muslim organization in Indonesia) to strengthen the country hand in hand with the government.
The head of state made the call in his speech at NU’s 82nd anniversary at Bung Karno sports stadium in Senayan area, Jakarta, on Sunday (3/1).<>
"I want NU to appear in front as a precursor like in the past," the president was quoted by the state news agency as saying.
He said NU has for 82 years actively participated in establishing the national concept and consensus on state ideology of Pancasila, the Unitary State of Indonesia and the principle of Bhineka Tunggal Ika (the diversity in unity).
He further said that NU always actively gave its contribution to the state and nation as well as taking part in national activities and helping solve various problems in the country.
The president also appreciated NU as it has always taken fair and moderate measures in solving problems while opposing extremism in maintaing the Islamic unity.
On the occasion, the head of state also said that developing the country towards safe and peaceful condition in the future was unlikely done in a short time without challenges.
Thus, the head of state called on all parties to remain optimistic and patient.
He further said following the monetary crisis in the past decade, Indonesia has made significant progresses in all sectors of life.
Meanwhile, NU’s executive board on the occasion called on President Yudhoyono, Vice President Jusuf Kalla and former presidents to make the activity (celebrating NU’s anniversary) a get-together event among national leaders.
Among the invitees who were absent at the event were former president Abdurrahman Wahid and former president Megawati Soekarnoputri while Titiek Soeharto represented former president (late) Soeharto’s family to the event.
Former vice president Try Sutrisno was also present on the occasion among other state officials including Chairman of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Hidayat Nur Wahid. (dar)
