The United Development Party (PPP) has officially rejected the Indonesia-Singapore defense agreement signed by the two countries in Bali recently.

The official rejection was delivered by the chairman of the PPP faction in the House of Representatives (DPR), Lukman Hakim Syaifuddin to the DPR Deputy Chairman Soetardjo Soerjoguritno at the Parliament building here on Monday.<>

Besides Lukman, other executives of the PPP central board who came to the DPR building to submit the rejection were PPP senior adviser Tosari Widjaya and PPP faction treasurer Suharso Monoarfa.

Lukman said PPP was calling on other factions in the House to turn down the defense agreement because it disturbed Indonesia’s sovereignty.

He said the agreement was signed by the government without the approval of the DPR.

Therefore, the PPP faction would not take part in deliberations on the agreement and not support its ratification.

"Under the agreement. Singapore is allowed to fire missiles four times during a military exercise and this raises concern and is disturbing," he was quoted by Antara as saying.

Lukman Hakim said the defense agreement should not be linked with the extradition treaty. In terms of extradition with Singapore, he said, PPP would encourage the DPR to ratify it. (dar)
