Participants meet with Leeds Faiths Forum

The NU delegates participating in a training of school education management in the University of Leeds met with Leeds Faiths Forum on Wednesday.

The development worker of the forum Afshan Tabassum said that her organization was a membership one open to faith groups and numbers of groups, agreed by the Forums Council.

According to Tabassum the most important roled played by the forum was how to promote religious harmony for the benefit of the public in Leeds and environs.

"In this case we promote knowledge and mutual understanding and respect of the beliefs and practices of different religious faiths. We also advance education and understanding of different religious beliefs including an awareness of their distinctive features and their common ground," Tabassum said.

"Our work is centred on bringing people together through their faiths and beliefs to share the commonalities and to respect the differences. Only in this way we can take steps forwadr towards creating cohesive and harmonious communities and address social exclusion and religious discrimination," She added.

She further explained its other aims such as promoting general charitable purposes for the benefit of the community of Leeds and the surrounding area by providing relief from financial hardship and social and/or economic disadvantages.

Tabassum added that there were partnerships in the forum, namely Leeds, City Council, Leeds Initiative, Leeds Voice, Leeds Church Intitute, UK Interfaith Network, Yorkshire and Humber Faiths Forum, Voluntary Action-Leeds, Faith Communities, Churches Regional Commission, Leeds Concord, and Active Faiths Communities Program.
