Due to the stagnant reform in Indonesia having been running since 1998, the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) would learn more about reform process in both China and Russia.

The statement above was said by the General Chairman of the Indonesia’s biggest Muslim organization KH Hasyim Muzadi at a seminar taking up the legality of amendment of the 1945 Constitution at the NU office, Jalan Kramat Raya 164 Jakarta Monday.<>

According to Hasyim, PBNU had so far examined the reform process related to especially the nation’s constitution, namely the 1945 Constitution having been done for fore times within the period of 1999 to 2002. He considered “the amendment is now in polemic.”

As the largest Muslim organization and part of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia, Hasyim added, NU would like to seek a solution in supporting the reform process. That’s why it’s an appropriate measure for the nation’s policy makers to examine the reform process in other countries such as China and Russia.

“China is one of the (world’s) countries that is success in undertaking reform as that being introduced by Deng Xiao Ping through a dramatic economic reform in 1980s,” Hasyim said, adding that Indonesia may learn the China’s reform.

The leader of Islamic boarding “Pesantren” school Al Hikam, Malang, East Java, also explained that there was another country like Russia undertaking successfully the reform process through its “Glassnot and Prestorika” policy driven by Michael Gobachev.

Hasyim added, his nahdliyin-based organization would soon send a team to leave for Russia aimed at studying its reform process. (rif)
