The Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) would reportedly invite a number of ulema at its third international conference, so-called as International of Islamic Scholars (ICIS III) in Jakarta July ahead, The invitation would soon be sent to the newly independent state from Serbia.

General Chairman of the PBNU KH Hasyim Muzadi made the statement at the Jakarta's PBNU headquarters on Wednesday (20/2).<>

Hasyim said, the invitation was not part of efforts to urge the government of RI to recognize Kosovo independence. "NU is just symphatetic to Kosovo independence," he told reporters.

The Secretary General of the ICIS was of view that it was absolutely the authority of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's administration in dealing with the Kosovo independence.

Hasyim said as the Indonesian biggest Muslim organization NU had welcomed the reasons of the new republic that was suggested its citizens are predominantly from Muslim ethnic Albanians.

"On account of the independence, Kosovo's Muslim people would relatively be safer," he said.

ICIS as the NU-initiated world ulema forum, he added, would only consider both the rights equality and justice for Kosovo's Muslim people.

Kosovo declared its independence from Serbia on Sunday (17/2). In Pristina, revelers fired guns, waved red-and-black Albanian flags and set off fireworks over the Kosovo Sunday after parliament proclaimed independence in defiance of Serbia and Russia, which condemned the declaration of the world's newest nation.

A decade after a bloody separatist war with Serbian forces that claimed 10,000 lives, lawmakers pronounced the territory the Republic of Kosovo and pledged to make it a "democratic, multiethnic state." Its leaders looked for swift recognition from the U.S. and key European powers — but also braced for a bitter showdown.

Serbia called the declaration illegal and its ally Russia denounced it, saying it threatened to touch off a new conflict in the Balkans. Russia and Serbia called for an emergency session of the U.N. Security Council, which met later Sunday. (rif)
