General Chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Said Aqil Siradj reiterated that the Indonesia's largest Muslim organization had remained opposed to liberal and extremist groups for the two are clearly not in line with the NU spirit of moderation.

"NU embraces moderate (tawassut) views rather than liberal. I think, the definition of liberal Islam if it has put aside the Quran and Hadits (Prophet traditions). If it bases (its views) on both (the Qur'an and Hadits), that is the rational (Islam), Mu'tazilities," he said. />
Siradj said instead of willing to influence the religious life the liberal groups could probably influence other aspects of life like economic, social, political and so on.

"Both the extremist and the liberal are equally dangerous but the extremist (groups) are more dangerous," Siradj said. (mkf)
