As the Indonesia's largest Muslim organization, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) has now faced serious threats posed by liberalism and radicalism.
"The two ideologies are of course capable of threatening the existence of the state and even religion. For that reason, in the context of dealing with the two mainstreaming threats, NU has developed the Islamic teachings of Ahlussunnah wal Jamaah," said chairman of the Kedungpring's chapter of NU, Drs. Hamim Baidlowie MM, on the sidelines of a meeting at the NU Vocational High School 2 of Kedungpring, Lamongan on Wednesday (2/9).<>
He was of the view that such moderate and tolerant religious teachings of NU should always be both developed and preserved amidst society.
"Through the religious teachings of NU, NU followers (Nahdliyin) in particular and Muslims in general will not easily be trapped into blind dogmatism and fanaticism," he said.
Hamim added the existence of the radical teachings and movements was due to the claim that they're the 'holiest' and the most truthful groups, "while others are the deviant ones."
"As a result, the emerging effect is in turn the increasing attitudes intolerant and opposed to any diversity within the Muslims themselves," the principal of the Kedungpring's NU Vocational High School 2 said.
As for him, in addition to being able to damage the prestige of Muslims themselves, the fanaticism and the dogmatism which tend to be exclusive have explicitly been opposed to the fundamental values of Islam.
Hamim expected the Nahdliyin to stay firm in practicing the Islamic teachings of Ahlussunnah wal Jamaah having so far been evolved by NU. (dar)
