In determining the beginning of the ninth month (Hijriyah) of the Islamic calendar especially about the beginning of Ramadhan, Syawal, Dzulhijjah, the country’s largest Muslim organization, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) has based itself on ru’yatul hilal bil fi’li, well-known as rukyat (determining date by sighting of moon especially to fix beginning and end of fasting period), as practiced by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). while, hisab may be merely considered as a supporting system.

The NU principle was called as ta’abbudi (worship or performing religious services) or taqdiimut ta’abbud ‘alat-ta’aqqul (emphasizing worship than reason) or ikmaalut-ta’abbud bit-ta’aqqul (perfecting worship with reason).

<> General Chairman of Nahdlatul Ulama Committee of Astrology, KH Ghozali Masroeri explained here on Tuesday (17/10), the rukyat had been still used by the Nahdliyin organization due to the command of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) “to determine the beginning of the month that is aimed to the ta’abbudi. NU didn’t base itself on the hisab because there is no such explicit command.”

Kiai Ghozali said the NU principle above was aimed at suggesting that science should be regarded as a means only in performing religious services. Dealing with the determining of the new month of the Islamic calendar, the hisab can be considered as a supporting media in undertaking rukyat.

“that (using the rukyat) means perfecting worship values by using reason,” kiai Ghozali said. (nam)
