Indonesia's largest Islamic organization Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) rejects the idea of an Islamic state for Indonesia as aspired by certain elements in Indonesian society.
General chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Said Aqil Siradj said here on Tuesday NU would remain consistent with its commitment to keep supporting "Pancasila" (Five Principles) as Indonesia's state ideology formulated in 1945 and there was no reason to change it.

"NU will keep fully supporting Pancasila as the legitimate foundation of the state," he said in his directives to hundreds of NU members at the Izudin Al Badar Islamic Boarding School in the village of Rakam in Selong subdistrict, Lombok Timur, West Nusa Tenggara.
He said Pancasila accorded with the Indonesian nation's world view and had been accepted by all people from Sabang to Merauke.
So, "let us jointly support the existing state foundation with regard to developing the nation for the better," he said.
Said Aqil Siradj said if Indonesia becomes an Islamic state who would then guarantee that the acts and attitudes of the people would always be in line with Islamic teachings.
He said "we have seen a lot of people especially in countries that have used Islam as their foundation that do not act in line with Islam. This must also be considered by those seeking to set up an Islamic state in Indonesia."
He said "an Islamic state is not fit for Indonesia while forming an Islamic state is not as easy as some people think," he said. (dar)
