The Nahdlatul Ulama Regional Board (PWNU) of Yogyakarta has called on Nahdliyin (NU followers) not to abstain from voting (golput) in the 8 July presidential election ahead. Their voting rights should properly be used in the much-awaited election.

The call was issued by PWNU along with its autonomous bodies such as Muslimat NU, Fatayat NU, Ansor Youth Movement, NU Student Association (IPNU), and NU Female Student Association (IPPNU).<>

In addition, the PWNU also called on Nahdliyin and each presidential success team pair across Yogyakarta not to involve themselves in money politics.

"In the presidential election process, NU is strongly opposed any money politics practice because it will plunge the ummah (people) into bribery (riswah)," said chairman of PWNU of Yogyakarta, Moch Maksum through a press release sent to NU Online on Friday (3/7).

Maksum who is also lecturer at the Yogyakarta's Gajah Mada University added, as a religious social organization, NU should remain committed not to involve in any practical politics.

"The involvement of strategic actors, members and functionaries of NU in winning one of the presidential-vice presidential pairs is in their capacity as individuals, has not represented NU organizationally," he said. (rif)
