Nahdliyin, Chinese-Indonesians pray for ‘Gus Dur’

Hundreds of Chinese-Indonesians and Nahdliyin (NU members) gathered Sunday at the Tay Kak Sie Temple in Gong Lombok in Semarang, Central Java, to pray for the well-being of ailing former president KH Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur).
Confucian and Islamic prayer services were held at the event, led by Haksu Bing Buana Jaya from Jakarta and Muhammad Munif Zuhri, head of the Giri Kusumo Islamic boarding school in Demak, Semarang.<>
"This prayer is to draw sympathy and attention to ‘Gus Dur’, who has contributed greatly to the Chinese-Indonesian cause," said Harjanto Halim, a prominent Chinese-Indonesian.
Wahid was the longtime NU chairman and president of Indonesia from 1999 to 2001.
During his term in office, he annulled a presidential decree that banned the use of the Chinese language and cultural expressions in Indonesia.
The prayer was also attended by a number of prominent locals, including former Central Java governor Ali Mufiz, and Nuril Arifin, head of the Soko Tunggal Islamic boarding school in Semarang. (jp/dar)
