The bombings at the JW Marriott and Ritz Carlton hotels in South Jakarta last Friday are not jihad but acts of terror, an Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) spokesman said.

"Jihad and acts of terror must be differentiated. Jihad is an obligation while acts of terror are not allowed under religious law," MUI Associate Chairman KH Ma`ruf Amin, said here Thursday on the sidelines of a seminar on halal certification.<>

He said jihad was only done if Moslems were under attack, in other words, it was done in self-defense.

In jihad, it was clear who the enemy and where the battle zone were while Friday`s bombings randomly harmed the general public.

"Jihad is resorted to in defense of religion, it is waging war for a noble, virtuous purpose. But before doing jihad, Moslems must first conduct da`wah (religious propagation). As long as they can still do it, Moslems must first engage in da`wah," he said.

Therefore, he said, the suicide bombers in Kuningan were not jihad fighters. They died not in jihad but merely in suicides.

He said radicals must return to the teachings of ulema because the true struggles for Islam were always waged according to certain methods.

"We cannot apply coercion nor sacrifice the lives of innocent people," he said.
Those who had carried out the bombings had distorted Islam, he said.

"They have a wrong understanding of Islam and created a state of war while in fact we are not at war," he said.

The bombings at the two luxury hotels early on Friday left nine people dead and more than 50 others wounded including some foreigners.

The police are now still investigating the case. Sketches of the faces of the two alleged bombers have been distributed among the public for identification. (ant/dar)
