Religious Affairs Minister Suryadharma Ali said here on Monday that Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) and Islamic schools (madrassa) were the backbone of the nation.

The minister called on all students studying at both pesantren and madrassa to be proud of themselves as part of the Indonesia's traditional educational institutions, saying the two were the last fortress defending the nation's morality.<<>br />
"Please be proud of being students (still) studying at pesantren and madrassa. Recently there have been many leaders talking about the nation's morality and ethics which likely continue to decline," he said.

The moral and ethical decline of the nation might be caused by such facts as religious education is still considered not as important as other educations which have, admitted or not, given positive and negative impacts. (dar)
