As many as 167 contestants, representing 96 countries and some 71 Islamic centers and societies from around the world, will participate in a major international Qur`an competition to be held in Makkah later this month.
The Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Endowments, Call and Guidance will organize the 29th King Abdul Aziz International Quran Competition.<>
The ministry has completed all the preparations and arrangements for the seven-day event, which will begin on October 28 (Shawwal 17), a ministry was quoted by IINA as saying in astatement.
The competition for the memorization, recitation and interpretation of the Holy Qur`an will be conducted in five categories.
There will be 21 contestants in the first category for the memorization of Quran in full with recitation and interpretation of meanings, 52 in the second category for memorization of 20 parts with recitation, 38 in the third category for memorization of 15 parts with recitation, 43 in the fourth category for memorization of 10 parts with recitation, and 13 in the fifth category for memorization of five parts with recitation.
The ministry has earmarked huge amount of money for meeting the expense of the competition. The first five winners in all the five categories will get a cash prize totaling to SR 888,000.
The first five winners in the first category will be presented with SR 75,000, SR 72,000, SR 69,000, SR 66,000, SR63,000 respectively.
The ministry will meet the expenses of the contestants, including their flight charges. Each contestant will get a fixed amount of remuneration, and those, who won more than 90 percent points in each category, will be given prize money ranging between SR 5000 and SR 2000, the statement said.
The ministry has arranged a comprehensive cultural program for the participants on the sidelines of the competition.
These included meetings with the governors of Makkah and Madinah, head of the General Presidency for the Affairs of the Haram Mosque and the Prophet`s Mosque, and imam of the Haram Mosque, as well as visits to the Prophet`s Mosque, King Fahd Quran Printing Complex of Madinah, Kaaba Kiswa factory, museum of the Holy Mosques and other religious and cultural landmarks in Makkah and Madinah, the ministry statement added.
