Former women’s empowerment minister Khofifah Indar Parawansa has been elected for the third time as the chairwoman of the women’s branch of Indonesia’s largest Muslim organization, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU).

She secured her third term in office for the 2011-2016 period, during the 16th congress of Muslimat NU in Lampung on Saturday evening.

Fifty one out of 52 Muslimat NU branches voted for Khofifah. The Yogyakarta branch, the only chapter that did not vote for her, said it would accept anyone elected.

The nearly unanimous support for her made the organization amend its regulation previously allowing a person to serve as the chairwoman for two terms only, tempointeraktif.com reported. (jp/dar)
