Istiqlal mosque to be sterilized for Obama visit

The biggest mosque in Southeast Asia, Istiqlal, will be sterilized from all normal activity on November 10 at 6.00 a.m at local time on the occasion US President Barack Obama's visit.

"The Mosque will be sterilized from any activity at 6.00 a.m. local time on November 10 for the US president's visit," the head of the mosque's security unit, H.M. Subakir, said here Monday<>.

The mosque's security unit would cooperate with both the Indonesian and US presidential security guard forces to ensure security during Obama's visit, Subakir said.

According to Subakir, the Indonesian Security Guard Force had already held an on-the-spot rehearsal of its mission during Obaman's visit.

Some of US officials had earlier monitored the area around the mosque to analyze the perimeter, he said.

"President Obama is scheduled to visit Istiqlal Mosque on November 10 at 8.45-9.15 a.m. local time," the secretary of the Istiqlal Mosque Management, Drs. H. Subandi, M.Si, said.

Obama was scheduled to come to the Istiqlal Mosque accompanied by his wife, Michelle, but not with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, he said, adding that this was the schedule received by the mosque`s management.

"President Obama will make a brief visit to the biggest mosque in Southeast Asia to see the mosque and to gain an understanding of mosque's history ," Subandi said.

Istiqlal Mosque is the symbol of Indonesia as the country with the largest Muslim population in the world, he said.

Obama's visit was expected to bring peace and inter-faith tolerance to all Muslim Countries in the world, he said.

The grand imam of Istiqlal Mosque, Prof. Dr. KH Ali Mustafa Yaqub, M.A. would meet and greet President Obama during his visit on November 10.

Some officials of the Religious Affairs Ministry and high officials of the Istiqlal Mosque Management were also scheduled to welcome President Obama, Subandi said.

The management of the mosque was always poised and standby to welcome any guest , including the US President, he said, adding that the management would be responsible and maintain hygienic, sanitary conditions and security at the mosque.

President Obama was scheduled to enter the area of Istiqlal Mosque through the presidential gate on the south side of the mosque.

According Subandi, the President of Austria, Heinz Fischer, was also scheduled to visit Istiqlal Mosque on November 10 at 9.30-10.00 a.m. local time. (dar)
