Prof Dr Nur Ahmad Fadhil Lubis, an Islamic sociologist made a misinterpretation of holy Koran articles and Hadists (Koran message stories) on jihad (exerting one`s power repelling the enemy), committed by terrorists, as basis of their terrorist action.

"There are also possibilities that Jihad was used as an excuse to justify their actions," Fadhil Lubis said in Medan recently.<>

He said that there are several Koranic articles about jihad among Muslims, but the holy Koran also explained what states where jihad is prohibited, and Islam always taught to maintain peace.

The point is, that there are several articles in the holy Koran or Hadists which explains such situation in times of war and peace, he said.

He estimated that the groups involved in the terrorist actions only read the Koran articles applied in times of war but forgetting the clarifications applicable to times of peace.

However there is also an indication that terrorists used the term jihad to justify their actions, he said.

Unfortunately, there are several groups in the society still accepting misinterpreted doctrines, because many people still lacked education, especially when comes to religions, Ahmad said.

There are also people in several community groups who are still Koran illiterate, they cannot read passages of Koran loudly and correctly.

"They need others to read the holy Koran for them," Ahmad was quoted by Antara news agency as saying. (dar)
