Hasyim: Confusing DPTs will lead to possible psycho-political barrier

General chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama KH Hasyim Muzadi said if the voter lists (DPTs) were still chaotic, they would lead to a possible psycho political barrier for whoever is elected as president.

Hasyim said such condition could potentially disturb the national life for being considered as a disgrace of the nation.<>

For that reason, he greatly appreciated any step taken by the General Elections Commission (KPU) to deal with various issues related to the confusing voter lists by cooperating with the success teams of all presidential and vice-presidential candidate pairs.

"To avoid pro-contra, mutual distrust and cuspision ahead of the presidential election, we call on all parties to open themselves to one another," Hasyim said in a joint statement along with head of the Bishops' Conference of Indonesia (KWI) Mgr MD Situmorang and head of the Protestant Church in Indonesia (PGI) Prof Andreas Yewangoe at the PBNU headquarters on Monday.

The three figures also urged all the nation's elements to take into account of the importance of mutual respect to maintain the nation's unity and stay alert against those willing to threaten the life of ethnical and religious groups.

Present also at the occassion were presidential candidates along with their running mate Megawati Soekarnoputri-Prabowo Subianto and Jusuf Kalla-Wiranto. (dar)
