The first anniversary of the death of KH Abdurrahman “Gus Dur” Wahid was commemorated on Saturday by lion dancers, seminars and his informal proclamation as Indonesia’s 10th wali.

The proclamation naming the former Indonesian president as a Muslim religious leader was made to honor his great contributions to the Muslim world, Sunan Kalijaga Islamic University Prof. H. Yudian W. Asmin said.<<>br />
Yudian made his announcement at a conference at Tebuireng Muslim boarding school in Jombang, East Java.

“It is fair to name Gus Dur the 10th wali?” Yudian said to boarding school students, referring to the Wali Songo, nine religious leaders who aided Islam’s initial spread through Java.

“Yes!” participants answered as quoted by temporinteraktif.com news portal.

Yudian said that Gus Dur was a wali whose duty was to maintain the unitary state of the Republic of Indonesia. “The nine wali were responsible for only a certain limited region, while Gus Dur safeguarded a much bigger area,” he said.

Gus Dur, who was also chairman of Indonesia’s largest Muslim organization, Nahdlatul Ulama, had mastered Islamic philosophy — something other ulemas forgot, according to Yudian.

“His Islamic philosophy managed to settle the problem of pluralism in Indonesia at that time,” he said.

“Gus Dur once said that his life was dedicated only to Indonesia, Islam and Nahdlatul Ulama,” he added.

The ceremony was also attended by House of Representatives Deputy Speaker Lukman Syaifudin, Constitutional Court chief justice Mahfud MD and several ulemas from East Java.

Mahfud said that thanks to Gus Dur, pluralism was no longer a grave problem for the nation.

“Now Islam no longer constitutes something people to fear as old fashioned. The biggest role for pluralism was played by Gus Dur,” he said.

According to Mahfud, the biggest problems currently facing the nation were injustice, poor law enforcement, poverty and rampant corruption practices.

The commemoration of Gus Dur’s death was marked by reviews of Gus Dur’s thoughts and works and a grand tahlil prayer session at his grave.

A parade of 50 barong lion dancer groups proceeded from Jombang’s city square to the boarding school on Saturday morning to support Gus Dur’s close connection with the Chinese-Indonesian community.

“This is a private initiative from all TTID [Tri Darma Places of Worship] throughout East Java. We voluntarily want to contribute something to the one-year commemoration of Gus Dur’s death,” said Willy, one of the event’s organizers. (dar)
