A group calling itself the Khittah Purification Movement (GPK) of Nahdlatul Ulama has criticized the general chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Hasyim Muzadi for allegedly violating the Khittah (organizational principles) by involving NU in the practical politics.

The group mostly consisting of NU young cadres made the remarks at a press conference here on Thursday, saying that many NU active board members had so far involved themselves in the political arena.<>

"The involvement of NU board members in the practical politics have been so massive and apparently continued to emerge from time to time," the group said.

It said that all NU potentials and strengths had strikingly been directed to politics aimed at pursuing power. This phenomenon, the group said, had emerged since 2004 as Hasyim who still in the time served as general chairman of PBNU accompanied Megawati Soekarnoputri as her running mate in the 2004 presidential election.

Since then, the group said, NU board members had involved themselves in the political arena, adding that it could be seen from their involvement in various regional elections in such regions as West Java, Central Java and East Java including in the 2008 presidential election.

Special in this year's presidential election, spokesman of GKP NU, Isfah Abidal Aziz, said that NU had structurally involved itself in supporting certain presidential and vice presidential candidate pair, adding that "in all the political moments, NU has always failed."

Whereas, Isfah said, NU had been committed to 'say' no to practical politics since 1984 through a NU Congress decision. The decision was based on a strong line of thought that practical politics would no make more progress for NU.

"Since then, NU has returned to be religious social organization with the spirit, back to the Khittah," said Isfah, accompanied by secretary-general of the Ansor Youth Movement A. Malik Haramain.

GPK NU consisted of some NU intitution and autonomous bodies such as NU  Family Welfare Institution (LPK NU), Fatayat NU, GP Ansor, NU Student Organization (IPNU), NU Female Student Organization (IPPNU) and Indonesian Muslim Student Movement (PMII). (rif)
