Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security affairs Widodo A.S. says the terrorism law needs to be amended to improve the country's bid to mount a concerted effort to fight terrorism.

"We need to amend the clause stipulating the roles of the intelligence body and the police force,” he said Monday in a meeting with the House of Representatives’ Commission I, which oversees defense, in Jakarta.<>

“We need to further maximize their roles."

Widodo added the current law was not adequate to help the government fight terrorism.

However, the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle’s (PDI-P) Andreas Pareira said the government needed to lay out more clearly its case for the amendment.

"In what way does the law hinder the government from fighting terrorism?” he asked.

“This needs to be elaborated on. If we find the explanation to be reasonable, we can talk about an amendment," he was quoted by The Jakarta Post as saying.

Empowering security forces other than the police, including the Indonesian Military (TNI) and the State Intelligence Agency (BIN), has become a major issue recently, raising fears it could usher back the authoritarianism of the New Order era.

During that period, thousands of opposition dissenters were arrested and detained by the military without proper trial.

The House meeting with the government is currently in recess for 20 minutes. (dar)
