First batch of Indonesian haj pilgrims depart for Saudi Arabia

Religious Affairs Minister Maftuh Basyuni and Transportation Minister Jusman Syafii Djamal saw off the first batch of Indonesian haj pilgrims who left for Medina, Saudi Arabia, on Saturday.
Besides that group, consisting of 450 people, a total of 3,490 people were also scheduled to depart on Saturday for the religious journey from 11 departure centers including Jakarta, Banda Aceh, Padang, Palembang, Solo, Banjarmasin, Balikpapan andMakasar.<>
As of Friday, records of the Ministry of Religious Affairs showed 209,722 people would take part in this year's pilgrimage.
National flag carrier Garuda Indonesia and Saudi Arabian Airlines will fly them -- in a total of 483 groups -- to Saudi Arabia from international airports across the country.
Making the haj pilgrimage is obligatory for Muslims who are financially and physically able. (dar)
