The Nahdlatul Ulama Regional Branch Board of East Java has warned all NU branch boards, institutions, and autonomous bodies through out the province not to make advantage of any attributes and symbols using the name of NU. The ban is part of the neutrality of the NU in upcoming gubernatorial election as well as maintaining what called as khittah (organization principles).
The ban was issued through a letter of instruction No 162/PW/A-I/L/III/2008 on 15 March and signed by the Rais Syuriah (chairman of law making body) of East Java’s NU KH Miftachul Akhyar and Chairman of the East Java’s NU KH Ali Maschan Moesa—before declaring himself to run with Soenarjo in the province’s first-ever gubernatorial election.<>
The letter of instruction was then sent to all NU branch boards, institutions, and autonomous bodies through out the province.
“Before the letter of instruction issued, PBNU has also issued such appeal on regional election (Pilkada) No 115/2005 specially banning all NU followers to use the NU’s attributes in politics,” Vice Chairman of the East Java’s NU H Sholeh Hayat said here Wednesday (26/3).
As reported by the NU Online news portal, political parties in East Java have recruited members from NU as the dominant local Muslim organization in an apparent strategy to win the gubernatorial election in July.
The Golkar Party, which holds 15 of the 100 seats in the provincial legislature, has nominated chairman of the Nadhlatul Ulama (NU) provincial chapter, Ali Maschan Moesa, as running mate of incumbent vice governor Soenaryo.
The coalition of the National Mandate Party (PAN) and Democratic Party (PD) nominated chairman of the NU-affiliated youth organization, Ansor Syaifullah Yusuf (Gus Ipul), as running mate of the secretary of the provincial government, Soekarwo.
The NU-affiliated National Awakening Party (PKB), which formed a coalition with the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), has decided to nominate influential NU figure Achmady as a candidate for governor and is seeking a suitable figure to run alongside him. PKB holds 31 seats in the provincial legislature.
Minority parties have approached female NU member Khofifah Inda Parawansa to be running mate of their governor hopeful Djoko Subroto, former chief of the Brawijaya Military Command overseeing security in the province. (duta/dar)
