The Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende has sent a letter to the General Chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Hasyim Muzadi related to the imminent broadcast of an anti-Islam film entitled ‘Fitna’ made by a far-right Dutch parliamentarian Geert Wilders.

The letter was delivered by the First Secretary of Dutch Ambassador to Indonesia Alexander Kofman to the Jakarta’s PBNU headquarters on Wednesday (26/3).<>

In the letter Balkenende said that Wilders did not reflect his government stand and views on Islam.

The Dutch government has tried and failed to convince Wilders not to broadcast his controversial film, fearing a repeat of the worldwide protests which met the publication of satirial Danish cartoons mocking Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

Hasyim told reporters that the Dutch government understood the disappointment of the NU and many other religious organzations in Indonesia over the Fitna, which may spark a new religious tension.

The caretaker of the Al Hikam Islamic boarding school (pesantren) of Malang East Java said that the Dutch government could not ban a film which has not been aired yet. However, once the film is available to the public, state prosecutors could investigate whether or not the film incites crime.

Balkenende agreed that violence should be avoided should the film be released on the Internet.

As reported by the NU Online news portal, religious leaders had formerly held a meeting at the PBNU headquarters to reject the Wilders’ Fitna and say that it was offensive to Muslims.

Those attending and signing the refusal joint statement were KH Hasyim Muzadi, chairman of Muhammadiyah Din Syamsudin, chairman of the Bishop Council of Indonesia MD Situmorang and chairman of the Indonesian Communion of Churches AA Yewange. (mkf)
