Constitutional court approves use of ids to cast votes

The Constitutional Court (MK) decided on Monday evening that unregistered voters are allowed to exercise their voting right in next Wednesday`s presidential poll by showing their identity cards.
"We hereby partially accept the judicial review request," Constitutional Court Chairman Mahfud MD said when reading the court`s decision on a request for a judicial review of Law No. 42 / 2008 on Presidential and Vice Presidential Elections here on Monday.<>
The MK accepted the judicial review of Article 28 and Article 111 point (1) of the law.
Earlier in the day, presidential aspirants Jusuf Kalla and Megawati Soekarnoputri visited the KPU to submit two proposals to solve the DPT problem.
The proposals were submitted to KPU chairman Abdul Hafiz Anshary during a closed-door meeting at the KPU head office here.
In the first proposal, Jusuf Kalla and Megawati Soekarnoputri asked the KPU to update the permanent voters` lists, and in the second one , they asked the KPU to permit unregistered voters to use their identity cards to vote in the presidential election.
The KPU accepted the proposal to correct and update fixed voters` lists (DPTs) for the presidential poll on Wednesday.
"We agreed to update the DPTs and reexamine them to strike off duplicated names, the names of voters who have passed away, active military/police personnel and unmarried voters who are under 17 years old," KPU Chairman Abdul Hafiz Anshary told a press conference here on Monday.
He said the KPU had instructed its offices in the provinces and mayoralties, subdistrict election committees (PPK), polling committees (PPS) and polling organizers` groups (KPPS) to update the DPTs.
"We have also ordered the KPU rank and file to give soft copies of the updated DPTs to the campaign teams of the presidential candidates and polling witnesses," he said.
On the proposal that unregistered voters be allowed to use their identity cards to cast their votes, the KPU left it to the Constitutional Court to decide because the matter had been stipulated by the election law. (ant/dar)
