British ulemas grouped in the Indonesia-UK Islamic Advisory Group (IAG) will make a four-day visit in Indonesia on June 12-15, 2007.
The IAG, which was jointly set up by the governments of Indonesia and Britain, is composed of seven British Muslim ulemas.<>
The British ulemas who will be visiting Indonesia are Asim Siddiqui, Shaykh Muhammad Bilal Abdallah, Dr Musharraf Hussain, Moulan Shahid Raza, Sabira Lakha and Mishal Husain.
"Yusuf Islam could not joint the trip," the Indonesian Embassy spokesman in London, Pribadi Sutiono was quoted by Antara as saying on Wednesday.
While in Indonesia, he said, the British ulemas would visit Islamic boarding schools, the State Islamic University (UIN) and to attend a dinner party at the Ministry of Religious Affairs.
Sutiono said that the British ulemas were also scheduled to have talks with the Indonesian Ulemas Council (MUI) and the Council of Indonesian Mosques. They will also visit the Istiqlal Mosque and meet with executives of Islamic organizations such as Muhammadiyah and Nahdlatul Ulama (NU).
The IAG was established as a result of the visit of British Prime Minister Tony Blair to Indonesia in March 2007.
The IAG meetings are aimed at formulating recommendations to both governments in order to achieve three goals, namely preventing religious extremism, promoting Islam as a peaceful and tolerant religion and promoting understanding between Islam and the West.
Indonesia has sent seven ulemas to Britain, namely Hasyim Muzadi, Prof Din Syamsuddin, Prof. Marwah Daud Ibrahim PhD, Prof. dr Nasaruddin Umar, Abdul Mu`ti and Yenny Zannuba Wahid.
They were led by Prof. Azumardi Azra and held a meeting with the seven British ulemas.
The meeting produced recommendations, among others, on the need to exchange Imams (prayer leaders) and religious scientists, translate Indonesian religious and democratic literatures into English, establish twinning programs among religious schools, exchange youths and promote religious activities at the grassroot level.
