Uleme in Aceh Province have expressed hope that President Barack Obama's visit to Indonesia would result in something meaningful for the realization of an independent state of Palestine.
"We hope that Obama's visit to Indonesia will create the prospect of the speedy realization of Palestinian independence," Tgk Faisal Ali, secretary general of the Aceh Ulema Association (HUDA), said here Tuesday.r />
He made the statement in view of the US president's plan to visit Indonesia on November 9-10, 2010.
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, as the leader of the country with the largest Moslim population in the world, should convey the Indonesian people's view on Palestine to Barack Obama, he said.
"The Indonesian nation should ask for the US President`s commitment to realizing Palestinian independence as part of his efforts to change the bad image of the US in the eyes of the world`s Muslim communities," he said.
Faisal Ali, who is also chairman of the Aceh's Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), said the US had so far always acted in connivance with Israel concerning the Palestinian issue.
"It is now time for the US to pressure Israel to respect the human rights of the Palestinian people," he said.
Muslims were eager to see the creation of real world peace during the Obama administration, he said.
He also reminded the Indonesian government not to allow itself to be dictated by the US which had been always been tacitly defending Israel.
"We ask Barack Obama to meet his presidential campaign promise, namely to create world peace," he said.
As a Nobel peace prize laureate, President Barack Obama should translate the prize`s noble values into concrete actions, Faisal Ali said.
US President Barack Obama will make a state visit to Indonesia on November 9-10, 2010.
"President Obama`s visit to Indonesia will be part of his Asian tour and take place after he has been to India and before he comes to South Korea and Japan," Teuku Faizasyah, a spokesman of the foreign affairs ministry, said in a written statement received by Antara News recently. (dar)
