The House of Representatives agreed Tuesday to launch an inquiry into problems with the 2008 haj pilgrimage services to Mecca.
“We will use our inquiry right to improve pilgrimage services and the professionalism of the Religious Affairs Ministry,” Deputy House Speaker Muhaimin Iskandar told a plenary session of lawmakers.<>
Based on the 1945 Constitution, Article 20 says legislators have the right to inquire and this can be used to look at any government policy.
The House accused the government of mismanaging the 2008 pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia.
“The 2008 pilgrimage services were bad, drawing many complaints from pilgrims. We are determined to use our inquiry to improve the pilgrimage services next year,” Zulkarnaen Djabar, of Golkar, said.
This won support from seven of the 10 factions in the House. The three factions opposed it were the Democratic Party (PD), the United Development Party (PPP) and the the Prosperous Peace Party (PDS).
“We have already formed a team to check the pilgrimage case. So let’s just let the team work as effectively as possible,” PD legislator Nurul Iman said at the meeting.
In recent years Indonesian pilgrims have experienced problems in Mecca. In 2007 they went hungry over problems with caterers. In 2008 the pilgrims faced accommodation and transportation problems.
According to Zulkarnaen Djabar, many pilgrims had been booked into accommodation quite some distance from Mecca last year. Pilgrims had difficulties getting to the Masjidil Haram mosque for prayers.
“Most of our pilgrims stayed more than 10 kilometers from the famous mosque. Although the Saudi government was supposed to provide buses, many were in disrepair and the drivers refused to transport them except at certain times,” he said.
Previously, the House’s Commission VIII for social and religious affairs held a meeting with Religious Affair Minister Maftuh Basyuni to explain about the problems with the 2008 pilgrimage.
“We admit there were some mistakes and insufficient services,” Maftuh told the meeting on Monday. He promised to solve and fix these problems as soon as possible. (jp/dar)
