In dealing with the hike of the world oil prices, the oil-producing Muslim countries should ideally enjoy their oil's advantages, but in fact, they have still faced mounting oil prices. In turn, they would be in deep suffering more and more. Admitted or not, in 1970s under the leadership of charismatic King Faisal from Saudi Arabia, the OPEC has ever shocked the world and been able to control oil products and prices. But after being dominated by oil kings consisting of capitalists, the organization has had no power any mor<>e.
But it does not mean that the power of oil in is an end as all have been dominated by Western oil companies. We can take Venezuela for instance as one of the OPEC member countries having been capable of using its oil as such a means to empower its people and free other Latin American countries from “the hand” of the West capitalism. Venezuela has been supported by comparable oil prices, economic assistance and any other heritages so that all Venezuela’s people can live life in prosperity, independent, and dignity.
As an independent nation, Iran has also been able to take advantages of its abundant oil to empower its people by developing education, health, and high technology achievements. The nation can be like any other nations of the world due to its absolute rights in managing its oil resources. Iran in exploring its oil, in this respect, has put aside again and again multinational corporations being able to exploit instead of giving such advantages to the nation. Many Muslim countries have now been in poverty in the midst of greatly overflowing oil resources like Indonesia, Nigeria, and so on.
Amid the mounting oil prices, Indonesia has been trapped into "unforgivable sin" instead of attaining advantages for in fact its people continue importing oil from foreign capitalists, dominating oil resources. Most of our oil resources have been exploited by foreigners. Just a little of the resources handled by Indonesia’s Pertamina and the Pertamina has now been full of private actors devoting fully themselves to trade affairs rather than service spirit for the people and the nation. What is so strange is that Indonesia as the big oil-producing nation has fallen into again poverty and been burdened by ongoing unsettled debts.
The nation’s existing oil resources can not be used for the people interests but have been exploited by foreign oil companies. Its oil resources can not be used to make the people prosperous instead of being used as a weapon to fight against the West hegemony as that suggested by the NU figure Kiai Said Agil Siradj. This all is caused by the fact that our oil resources have been dominated by foreign corporations as that happened in the era of colonization and the Pertamina itself has also been handled by privates working in it.
If we want to use the oil as such a medium in dealing with what called as hegemony, we ourselves should manage our oil capital. We can surely handle it for Indonesia has many experts and specialists and capital to finance. What we need is not but a willingness and political courage as that formerly being conducted by Bung Karno as he nationalized foreign corporations making the people sorrow. In the era of ours, the great men like Hugo Chaves in Venezuela and Eva Morales in Bolivia can do the same thing successfully with any possible risks. Referring to the oil in their hand, its advantages have been used to build their nation and even build their neighboring countries.
The pride and self confidence as a nation should be raised so it has a courage to take brilliant measures. Without the courage, the beloved country of ours would be a colonized nation bearing its rocketing foreign debts. For that reason, it’s necessary to immediately seek independent leaders not actors representing other countries instead of upholding their own people interests. If the ideal goals are implemented, the oil products of the nation can be used to address the people demands, develop education, health, strengthen defense systems and develop a respectful civilization.
It’s understandable that building civilization is in need of funds but more that that it does need both creativity and independence. In this respect, the funds can be used to strengthen the nation to be independent, creative and act in accordance with its own willingness and goals. (Abdul Mun’im DZ)
