The chairman of Indonesia’s largest Muslim association, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), KH Said Aqil Siradj, says there are no restrictions on Muslims conveying seasons’ greetings to those celebrating Christmas.<>
“I wish my Christian brothers and sisters a merry Christmas. Hopefully we can all bask in the glory of God, and our nation becomes more prosperous and successful,” Said stated on Wednesday as quoted by kompas.com.
He underlined that there was nothing wrong with Muslims wishing a merry Christmas to Christians celebrating the holiday, and added that he hoped this year’s Christmas celebrations would be a blessing for Indonesians and a symbol of peace and prosperity.
The public, Said commented, must also contribute to ensuring a safe and conducive environment for Christmas celebration events on Thursday, as a public tolerant of differences was a reflection of Indonesia’s attitude as a civilized nation.
“We hope every citizen respects Christmas. By doing so, we are showing that Indonesia is a modern and tolerant society,” Said added.
