At least 300 students grouped under Indonesian students alliance held a rally in front of the State Palace in Central Jakarta, Monday (21/4). <>
The action led by Nahdlatul Ulama Female Students Association (IPPNU) demanded the central government to take action over the ban on wearing headscarves in almost all public schools in the province of Bali.
The alliance consisting of many student organizations such as (Indoensian Islamic Stundets (PII), Muhamamdiyah Youth Association (IPM), and so on, considered that public schools had discriminated against Muslim female students from wearing headscarves and it was in violation of the Constitution.
About 40 schools in Bali have banned their Muslim students from wearing the headscarves. They are junior high schools, senior high schools, and vocational schools.
The student association then sent letters as protests to governor of Bali, regional office of Ministry of Education and Culture, and regional parliament.
The National Commission on Human Rights is still trying to bring the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Ministry of Education and Culture together to discuss the issue.
